The McAllen Heritage Center - museum of history and culture is located in downtown McAllen's historic former US post office constructed in 1935. The heritage center hosts memorabilia, artifacts, maps and photos that tell the story of McAllen's 100 year history and also features the work of local artists. Shop in the La Tiendita museum store where to you can many historical books, postcards, tees, jewelry, souvenirs and more all to benefit the museum mission. Admission is free with limited free parking for guests in the museum rear parking lot. Please call us for more information: 956-681-2860. Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park near Brownsville, Texas is a National Park Service unit which preserves the grounds of the May 8, 1846, Battle of Palo Alto. It was the first major conflict in a border dispute that soon precipitated the Mexicanu2013American War. The United States Army victory here made the invasion of Mexico possible. The historic site portrays the battle and the war, and its causes and consequences, from the perspectives of both the United States and Mexico.

The Veterans War Memorial Foundation of Texas provides an educational, cultural, and historical facility to assist our children, and future generations, to learn about the sacrifices of those who died in the service of their country. The Veterans War Memorial of Texas emphasizes the value of their legacy, and the important lessons which must be learned from those sacrifices. Events on Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Pearl Harbor Day are held each year with the support of the City of McAllen. Veterans, teachers, students, and all community members are encouraged to attend honoring all veterans for their service and remembering the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for the United States of America.
